Turn right (east) onto FR 143 and continue 28 miles to State Route 188 near Theodore Roosevelt Lake.

Due to the steep grades, the road was never eligible for the federal aid system, so it has always remained a state highway. The closure includes northbound lanes of SR 87 from Gilbert Road to SR 188 and southbound lanes from SR 188 to Shea Boulevard in Fountain Hills.

This 74-mile back road, from State Route 260 near Payson to State Route 188 north of Globe, winds through ponderosa pines and grasslands before shifting abruptly to the saguaros of Arizona’s high desert. The original route was constructed in 1904 as a wagon road, to provide access to Roosevelt Dam during construction of the dam.
