The dog leads them to a cabin in the forest, and naturally the two children go inside. Luka gives the children the silver chest containing the lost legend and tells them to follow silver dog back to their campsite, as the dog will protect them from thieves in the forest. Luka is surprised that the family doesn't want the Eternal Egg of Truth, but they explain that they would prefer the Lost Legend.

Mr. Clarke asks for the legend, and the current owners of the document give it to the trio. Each cat pulls one of the kids out of the water and bats them around, and the kids guess that the cats are preparing to eat them. They open the chest, read the scroll, and find out the only thing written on it is the following: "Whoever owns the lost legend will be lost forever." Luka then strips off his fur and explains what has happened to the children. The bats "swoop in for the kill", but they fly away after they hear a booming sound. Justin is the protagonist of the book. He finds Marissa, who had gotten up before him and done some exploring. The family is not in Antarctica at all, but rather camping out in a forest of a fictional European country named Brovinia. The cover illustration shows the viking Ivanna with her right foot on an ancient treasure chest. "The family starts walking back through the forest, treasure in tow, when they get overcome with a need to check out the Lost Legend for themselves. The children fall asleep in the strange woman's cabin and awake the next morning to find themselves in a clearing in the forest.

The cat then tries to swallow Justin. Follow silver dog. The family treks off to a stone clearing and meet with the wanderers who obtain the Lost Legend. He and his family have protected the forest's treasure for many years. It is Luka, a boy raised by wolves, who will serve as the children's guide in their survival test. They are now literally adrift in the ice.The children decide they must show their father this note, but unfortunately they can't wake him up. He goes into detail about why they are visiting the small country of Brovania. Luka takes back the egg, and he says he can direct the trio to the people who possess the document but mentions they probably won't be willing to part with it.The duo keeps running. Luka appears, walking on two legs, unlike before. In her back is a large wind-up key.Except the tree is artificial. The entire camp of people abruptly pack up their tents and leave. This torrent of nuts lands on the ground and the nuts pop open, and mice come out. After Justin accidentally knocks over a lantern and sets their tent ablaze, Justin's father lashes out at his children. Luka peels the fake fur off of his body and reveals that he built Ivanna and all of the other creatures in the Fantasy Forest.

The two realize that they must follow silver dog, even if their father can't go with them. Luka begins chasing a squirrel, and the kids lose track of him.
