In 1802, French immigrant Eleuthère Irénée du Pont founded black powder mills on the banks of Brandywine Creek. An early typewriter, ledgers, and telegraph key reflect the business activities that were once housed in this building.High on a bank of the Brandywine River overlooking the original powder mills, E. Five generations of du Pont family members lived in the house since its completion in 1803, each leaving their mark. Guided tours of the home and first office are given throughout the day. The Hagley complex, on 235 acres is fabulous, with the centerpiece being Eleutherian,overlooking the Brandywine,the 1st home built in America by a DuPont in 1802. Hagley is the former industrial site of the original black powder works of the DuPont Company, founded in Delaware in 1802 and powered by the natural resources that surrounded it.
