Because runoff and debris flows can be much more intense after a wildfire, conditions are such that flash flooding from monsoon storms could damage SR 88’s stream crossings, posing a threat to those on the highway and to those who may become trapped between areas damaged by flooding.Changing the closure points to mileposts 222 and 229 restores vehicle access to the Apache Lake Marina at the eastern end and moves the western closure point farther east from Tortilla Flat, which along with Canyon Lake remains accessible from Apache Junction. Over the next 3 miles, you’ll gain nearly 1,000 feet. SR 88, also known as Apache Trail, remains closed between mileposts 222 and 229 because of flood damage and the continuing potential for flooding from the Woodbury Fire burn scar.

This road weaves along the mountainside above Salt River Valley, then quickly drops to Fish Creek Bridge. At 22.2 miles, the pavement ends and the dirt road begins. Continuing on from Fish Creek Bridge, the trail remains fairly uneventful for the next several miles. With large cliffs to your right and Apache Lake not far off to your left, you’ll snake along the shore of the lake. Upon leaving Tortilla Flat, you’ll cross over Tortilla Creek which occasionally can flood the road. Continuing north, the trail begins to wind after 8.0 miles. When full, the lake’s shoreline measures 112 miles.

High … South of the Apache Trail is the vast Superstition Wilderness with an extensive network of hiking trails and backpacking opportunities. Follow this for 25 miles to exit 196 (Idaho Road) and turn left after exiting. Difficulty-wise, the Apache Trail is easy. There are a couple of tight turns around 35.0 miles where the road dramatically climbs. Easily extend your day trip by camping, hiking, or boating at numerous places along the trail. After 5 miles, follow the signs for Mesa/Globe as you merge onto US-60 East. At the bottom of the hill, you’ll cross over a narrow bridge over Fish Creek as the trail levels out. The Apache Trail is a 40-mile scenic byway through the rugged Superstition Mountains just on the outskirts of Phoenix. The trail itself if 44 miles not including time to drive to get to it and the relatively long drive through Globe to get back. They also have a gift shop and a great ice cream place if you feel like a break.
