For every fun mission where you blow up a base or take down skilled enemy pilots, who really can throw you for a loop (literally), there’s something far less appealing around the corner, including a wide variety of escort missions and at least three levels with slow, winding stealth sections. Even before you strap in and soar into the sky alongside your peers, you are given the opportunity to inspect your craft and the surrounding hangar, allowing you to soak in the painstaking detail that has been poured into every aspect of its creation. For Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown on the PlayStation 4, a GameFAQs message board topic titled "Are the new DLC missions compatible with VR? Even when you do, it feels like there should be more: The skins are mostly limited to variants from the story, which are almost all shades of gray with slightly different accent colors.

Technically, you can go back and replay these missions without the cumbersome objectives after you complete them, which can be fun but feels frivolous since you aren’t making progress or earning currency to buy new planes and upgrades.There’s just enough great gameplay in Ace Combat 7 to catch a glimpse of the “Forza Horizon for fighter planes” I wanted it to be – and that I still hope the Ace Combat franchise will one day become. Indeed, the crux of what makes the PSVR portion of Ace Combat 7 so enjoyable, are the substantial steps that have been taken in fashioning a truly immersive VR experience.

There’s definitely room in the world for a game that treats jets with the same reverence that arcadey racing sims treat cars, where you can pick up and understand pretty much everything right away (possibly after a tutorial or two).You also aren’t always given enough information to properly track your objectives. There’s a Metal Gear Solid-esque veneer of commentary that alludes to some kind of underlying theme, but veers in so many directions as to obscure any point it may have tried to convey. Air Show allows you to watch a spectacular air show from any angle with a 360 degree view from an aircraft carrier. It’s a shame, certainly, but there might be good news moving forward. All playable aircraft have ∞ (infinite) GUN ammo on Easy and Normal difficulty, but have finite ammo on Hard difficulty and above. But the experience often gets weighed down by its weird and convoluted but persistent story and poor communication of objectives. Content-wise, it is a far cry from the full fat, maximum sugar single-player campaign seen elsewhere in the game, as the Ace Combat 7 VR missions number just three and don’t take very long to complete at all.
